Vieques Peace Kites, Miguel Luciano 2002

Chiringas de Paz (Vieques Peace Kites) (2002) was a collaborative public art project uniting Puerto Rican and Latino youth from Brooklyn, NY with their peers in Vieques, Puerto Rico.

Vieques is an island off the coast of Puerto Rico that was used as a bombing range by the U.S. Navy for over fifty years. In an act of peaceful protest and solidarity, together we flew large-scale kites emblazoned with life-size photographic self-portraits over the fences of the military property, transgressing the borders from the sky.
