Amani Kites was a public art project in Nairobi, Kenya created through the smARTpower Program – an initiative of the Bronx Museum of the Arts and the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State (2012). 15 U.S. artists were selected to create community-based art projects in 15 countries around the world.
Luciano worked with artists and communities in Nairobi, Kenya where participants created large-scale, handmade kites featuring life-sized photographic self-portraits. As participants flew their kites they raised their own likeness into the sky above, forming the basis of a series of conversations about flying and freedom. The project continued in 2014 with support from Art Matters and the Lambent Foundation, and has continued to expand locally thorugh the artists at Wajukuu - a commununity-based arts organization in Nairobi.
